Ankle sprains are the most common injury in America. It is no surprise that ankle sprains account for nearly 2 million injuries every year or 20% of all sports related injuries. Aside from ankle sprains ankle pain can be caused by ankle instability, arthritis, gout as well as acute and stress related fractures.
1 Ankle Sprains
Every day in the United States 25,000 people sprain their ankle and more than 1 million people end up in the Emergency room because of an ankle related injury. The ankle joint is an inherently weak joint and is no surprise why this is the most common type of sports injury. An ankle sprain is an injury to one or more of your ankle ligaments.
2 Ankle Fractures
Ankle fractures are another common injury encountered in our practice. Ankle fractures can easily occur from rolling your ankle inward or outward or a slip and fall type of injury. A fracture involves a partial or complete break in the bone. An ankle fracture can involve one of the 2 bones, the tibia and/or the fibula, in the leg and are often accompanied by severe swelling and inability to bear weight.
3 Minimally Invasive Ankle Surgery
At Brick Foot & Ankle Center, Dr. John Mostafa specializes in the most innovative techniques that include minimally invasive surgery (MIS) for a multitude of ankle problems. Through the use of minimal and small incisions many ankle surgeries may be performed with less pain, scaring or wound complications.
4 Total Ankle Replacement
Total ankle arthroplasty also known as total ankle replacement, is a surgical procedure that replaces the arthritic ankle joint with a newly resurfaced ankle joint. This procedure is indicated to relieve pain and maintain motion in an end stage arthritic ankle joint.
5 Charcot Reconstruction
Charcot foot is a progressive condition that involves the gradual weakening of bones, joints, and soft tissues of the foot or ankle. Charcot foot is a severe complication of diabetes and is caused by peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage) in which the person’s foot or ankle becomes insensate (insensitive to pain).
